Field Trip: Willows for Flood Risk — Hinetai Hops, Tapawera

Following community requests from MCC’s Flood Risk Workshop in May, we’re heading out to Hinetai Hops in the Motueka Valley for a practical look at willows in action.

Dean Palmer will walk us through how he used willow planting alongside the river to keep flood debris out of his hop farm — and how it held up when it mattered in the floods last year. Appleton’s Nursery and Taylors Contracting will share how they propagate willows, and Tasman District Council will also cover propogation techniques, species selection and right tree, right place principles, including what you need to know before planting next to the Motueka River.

A great opportunity to see flood risk action on the ground and pick up practical knowledge for your own property.
