Bruce and the team had a fantastic, sunny day to get stuck into killing more Old Man’s Beard (OMB) on Sunday 13th April. Around 18 community members, many from the Pokororo area close to the bush site, came along to continue the job of controlling OMB in the beautiful Haycocks Bush. Bruce is very happy with progress and says:
“We’re nearly to the end of one bush tunnel, and we need to get to the end of the next bush tunnel then we’re finished”.
Jacob Lucas was also there to talk about predator control and MCC’s trap subsidy. Usually predator control and weed control need to go hand in hand when looking after native bush and plantings. See here if you’re interested in cheap traps – https://motuekacatchment.org.nz/traps-available-for…/.
You can see the team of weeders hard at work in the photos below. Some of the vines were enormous and took quite a bit of sawing to get through them, as you can see in the video.

This photo shows some of the beautiful trees that are part of this bush remnant area. There are not many bush remnants in the Motueka catchment, so we really need to look after the ones we have.
There will be more events planned later in the year to continue this work and keep on top of the OMB in this iconic location. If you’d like to join the Motueka River Volunteers, go here to sign up –
