River Access and Recreation Group day trip up the awa

On 8 April, members of the River Access and Recreation Group went on a trip along the awa to explore where new picnic tables might be installed at recreation spots. This is to add to the four tables already installed by the group last year, as you can see below.

The group visited nine new sites including:

  • the west bank of the Graham River (photo 1)
  • Haycocks Bush near an area of new Tasman District Council planting (photo 2)  or alternatively by the road (photo 3)
  • the west bank of the Rocky River (photo 4)
  • the Rocky River planting site (photo 5)
  • the Pokororo Swing Bridge where there is a sign that was erected by iwi (photo 6)
  • Thorpe Reserve where there is a MCC project being initiated to restore this piece of bush. The table in this location is already approved and has been purchased ready to be installed (photo 7)
  • approximately 1km downstream of the Pokororo Swingbridge (photo 8)
  • Just upstream of of the Alexandra Bluff Bridge (freedom camping site) (photo 9)

Five spots were identified as being suitable for new picnic tables. These spots will be further investigated by the group. The group are also interested in feedback from the community about these spots. If you do have any feedback, please email coordinator@motuekacatchment.org.nz.
