What's our journey?

The Motueka Catchment Collective (MCC) is a collective of local community members who aim to facilitate community action to enhance freshwater wellbeing across the Motueka catchment. The MCC began in 2020 when a group of motivated farmers in the Upper Motueka wanted to start a catchment group.

The collective is supported by funding from Ministry of Primary Industries to help build capacity and expand reach into the community.

What is the MCC doing?

MCC has run many events, workshops and training since its inception, along with supporting community members with their catchment projects. After asking the community what was important, Thematic Groups were set up to take action in the following areas across the catchment:

Funding and resources

The MCC received $870,000 funding from Ministry of Primary Industries in 2020 to help build capacity and expand reach into the community. The funding lasts until June 2025.

Other funding has come from Trees that Count and other external funding sources. In addition, places like Waimea Nurseries gift their used bamboo poles to MCC nurseries to help with native plantings. Many people gift their time and energy to the collective to organise events, contribute to discussions and decisions, and have an active involvement in training and conservation efforts.

Identifying priorities

A number of public meetings have been held across the catchment on different topics to ensure the focus of the MCC aligns with community goals. A survey was conducted in 2023 to determine what priorities the community want the Motueka Catchment Collective to focus on. The survey was sent to xx people, and 288 responses were received from community members from across the catchment. Three meetings were held across the catchment to discuss the results of the survey.

These informed the priorities identified by the collective as you can see on our home page.

Appointment of people and groups

Although it would be great to jump straight into mahi on the ground in the catchment, a big part of the Motueka Catchment Collective’s initial focus is to build capacity in the community, and to create strong, high functioning groups and connections to enable the mahi to be done effectively and collaboratively. In light of this, the following are examples of progress made to form groups and establish connections:

Support and partnerships

This article identifies the origins of the collective which includes a number of individuals and groups across the catchment, some of whom are still closely involved in the collective (click here).

This work could not be done without the help of many other organisations and individuals. The Motueka Catchment Collective is supported by the Tasman Environmental Trust. Like some other community led environmental groups or projects, TET provides support for budget management, administration, coordination and project management, and use of templates and systems.

The MCC also works closely with many other established groups and organisations who provide invaluable input. These include:

Events delivered

Events are a big part of bringing together and empowering the community in the catchment. So since the project started there have been many events held.
