New MCC picnic tables installed along the river
The River Access and Recreation Group have been progressing their project to install a number of picnic tables at popular spots along the Motueka River. The first was installed earlier last year, near Ngātīmotī at a spot known as Tinpot.
Before Christmas, four others were installed.
One wooden table has been installed at Alexander Bluff Bridge which overlooks a popular swimming hole.
There are now two concrete tables at Coles Beach which is on the Westbank Road upstream of the Pearse confluence. These tables overlook the river at a popular swimming spot and have a grand view of Wharepapa / Mt Arthur.
This site will develop over time as new native plantings grow, and it is hoped the grassed picnic area will become a popular site for swimmers and a staging point for cycle trail users.
Aligned with their intention to improve signage and information along the Motueka River, the River Access and Recreation Group hope to install some ‘knowledge sharing’ boards here also.
Another concrete table was installed at Tapawera Bridge – a popular place for locals to cool off in summer. This site will be improved over time as native plantings grow.
As stated by Jacob Lucas, member of the River Access and Recreation Group:
“We hope to install more picnic tables in the future at swimming places alongside the Motueka as they are pretty simple to install and are cost-effective. They are places for anyone to sit and enjoy.”
