SUMMARY:The 2nd BIG Motueka Valley community weeding event
DESCRIPTION:MCC invites you to come along to our second BIG community weeding event to clear Old Man’s Beard vines climbing up the large native trees from a site in the Motueka Valley next to Haycocks Bush. Last time the community managed to clear a length of 700 metres. Let’s see if we can top that! \nThese second community events are part of a wider MCC project to control weeds in this riparian area. It needs a BIG effort over the next year and this event will carry on the good work started at our last event. \nMCC will provide some tools and equipment. However if you have your own secateurs\, gloves and/or folding saw bring them along. Come in working clothes (long sleeves and pants) appropriate for the weather\, and be prepared to get stuck in! You’ll be divided into working groups with an experienced leader. Experts will be there to explain what needs to be done and how to do the mahi. \nThere’ll be some drinks and cookies afterwards to thank you for your efforts! \nThis event is part of a larger weeding project supported by MCC along the Motueka River West Bank riparian strip between the Graham River confluence and working upstream to the Hoods QEII block. This will involve ongoing weeding sessions between July 2024 and July 2026 to control weeds in this area. Some of this weeding will be done by community weeding croups\, and some by contractors. \nWe hope this community event will lead to increased community support for existing weeding groups in the valley who have an ongoing job to continue weeding in this area. We really need your support! \nPlease register here – https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VFXB5LL \n\n \n \n \n \n The weeding site\n \n \n \n \n \n Volunteers hard at work at MCC’s 1st weeding event

SUMMARY:Brooklyn Stream Community Planting Project - Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Come and be part of this community venture\nThere is a small stretch of land running beside the Brooklyn Stream from Linden Place Reserve. At present\, this area is overrun by invasive weeds and willows. \nWith the approval of landowners Vaila Orchards\, the Brooklyn Old Man’s Beard group (aka the BOMB squad) has gained funding to get the scrub commercially cleared for a native planting project. \nThis project will extend the native plantings in Linden Reserve and in time\, we hope this will add to the health of the Brooklyn Stream while enhancing the general well-being of this neighbourhood. \nIf you\, or someone you know\, would like to work alongside other like-minded locals on this project\, come to our planning meeting on Monday 7th October at 7pm. \nPlease email Kim at brooklynoldmansbeardmustgo@gmail.com \nor phone/text 027 288 2134 for the meeting details \nThis is a small project that will rely on occasional community involvement. If you have some spare time\, expertise or knowledge\, or you just want to join a Brooklyn environmental group\, then this might be the group for you! \nBrooklyn has a growing Old Man’s Beard problem but a bunch of locals are tackling it head on! \nA group of Brooklyn locals come together for monthly working bees to tackle the Old Man’s Beard vine in our immediate area and we’re looking for more volunteers who can donate a small amount of time to reducing the spread of this pest plant. If nothing else\, it’s a great way to get to know the neighbours! \nSince August 2023 we’ve chopped and poisoned OMB between the Brooklyn School and the Brooklyn Reserve and this year we’ve moved onto the West Bank Road. We’ve also tackled a couple of patches further up the Brooklyn Valley. Hopefully you’ve noticed the difference. \nSome of the Brooklyn Old Man’s Beard group\, aka the BOMB Squad!\nWorking bees are usually held once a month on Saturdays from 10am-12noon \nParticipation is simple – we provide the gear and guidance for a two hour session\, and there’s a friendly bunch of people to work alongside! We finish at noon with a quick roadside cuppa\, cake and chat. \nWe provide gloves\, saws\, poison and secateurs\, but you are welcome to use your own equipment. Loppers are especially useful and we encourage people to bring them along. \nNext working bee is scheduled for Saturday 5th October\n(weather dependent) \nIf you are interested in being part of this project please email us at brooklynoldmansbeardmustgo@gmail.com\nWe’ll add you to the mailing list and provide you with details of future working bees

SUMMARY:Native plantings an their co-benefits
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 11 May 2024 from 9:30 to 12:00 pm\nMahakaruna Farm\, 75 Thorp Orinoco Road\, Ngatimoti \nThe Motueka Catchment Collective Biodiversity and Restoration group invites you to a planting workshop held at Mahakaruna farm\, near Ngatimote. This includes a walk around a successful\, well established native planting\, of 50\,000 native plants which is ongoing. These have been managed both conventionally and\, in some places\, organically. \nThe farm is a 75 ha organic farm owned by Gary and Meg Hirsberg. Gary co-founded Stonyfield Farm\, the world’s largest organic yoghurt brand and champions organic production around the world. Their journey on this property has involved BioGro organic certification\, native reforestation (organic and non-organic)\, and infrastructure development. The farm is in the process of establishing certified organic herb and vegetable market gardens\, fruit\, nuts and olives\, an heirloom apple orchard\, livestock and honey. The centre combines organics and entrepreneurship and will eventually feature several NZ-owned organic micro-enterprises. \nThe native plantings\, practical demonstration of planting and native nursery\, will be the focus of this event. \nThere will also be a talk via zoom by Brad Howlett from Plant and Food. He will be reporting on his 2 million project which is supported by a number of farming organisations as well as the government. The project seeks to find optimal mix of native plant species\, planting areas\, and planting landscapes to maximise the number of insects providing pollination and predation behaviour without creating refuges for insect pests. He will talk about designing native plantings that might best optimise insect populations for pollination for pastoral farmers (clover pollination\, crops) and horticulture (kiwifruit\, apples) and for lifestylers. He will cover his latest results on which natives promote most pollinating insects and beneficial predator insects and how can a native planting be best designed to achieve these outcomes. \nA BBQ will be provided after the workshop. \nTo register go to this link – https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JDQD5H5
