Come and be part of this community venture
There is a small stretch of land running beside the Brooklyn Stream from Linden Place Reserve. At present, this area is overrun by invasive weeds and willows.
With the approval of landowners Vaila Orchards, the Brooklyn Old Man’s Beard group (aka the BOMB squad) has gained funding to get the scrub commercially cleared for a native planting project.
This project will extend the native plantings in Linden Reserve and in time, we hope this will add to the health of the Brooklyn Stream while enhancing the general well-being of this neighbourhood.
If you, or someone you know, would like to work alongside other like-minded locals on this project, come to our planning meeting on Monday 7th October at 7pm.
or phone/text 027 288 2134 for the meeting details
This is a small project that will rely on occasional community involvement. If you have some spare time, expertise or knowledge, or you just want to join a Brooklyn environmental group, then this might be the group for you!
Brooklyn has a growing Old Man’s Beard problem but a bunch of locals are tackling it head on!
A group of Brooklyn locals come together for monthly working bees to tackle the Old Man’s Beard vine in our immediate area and we’re looking for more volunteers who can donate a small amount of time to reducing the spread of this pest plant. If nothing else, it’s a great way to get to know the neighbours!
Since August 2023 we’ve chopped and poisoned OMB between the Brooklyn School and the Brooklyn Reserve and this year we’ve moved onto the West Bank Road. We’ve also tackled a couple of patches further up the Brooklyn Valley. Hopefully you’ve noticed the difference.
Working bees are usually held once a month on Saturdays from 10am-12noon
Participation is simple – we provide the gear and guidance for a two hour session, and there’s a friendly bunch of people to work alongside! We finish at noon with a quick roadside cuppa, cake and chat.
We provide gloves, saws, poison and secateurs, but you are welcome to use your own equipment. Loppers are especially useful and we encourage people to bring them along.
Next working bee is scheduled for Saturday 5th October
(weather dependent)
